dense + pika remix seminal nervous records house tune rain by kerri chandler dense & pika are a british electronic production/artist/dj duo compromising of producer/djs alex jones (hypercolour label boss) and chris spero better known to many by his glimpse alias. the duo first came into fruition in mid 2011 with a number of white label releases. it wasnt long until they were noticed by scuba and have since had multiple releases under their belt on adam beyers drumcode, scubas acclaimed hotflush imprint and have branched out onto the elusive hypercolour. dense & pika have also been showing off their remixing talents by reworking the likes of adam beyer & ida engberg, digitalism, disclosure, kda, leftfield, maya jane coles, x-press 2 and also paul woolfords erotic discourse, which won the dj mag category for best remix in 2014.

following on from his debut ep on drumcode earlier this year, ilario alicante returns. for the past few years ilario alicante has enjoyed something of an unintentional ibiza kinship with adam beyer. when the swede played his special annual sets on the amnesia terrace for cocoon, for three years out of four, the italian has been right there playing alongside him, ensuring his talents were on the radar of the drumcode chief. ilario made his first appearance on the label in 2016 with the stirring temporary featuring on a-sides vol.4, before securing his first full-length release with the awakened ep that dropped earlier this year. figures & echoes deepens his contribution to the label with half a dozen powerful cuts. figure of ra opens the ep, combining a rousing vocal loop, pulsating beats and effective melodic interlude to fantastic effect. the acid runner follows and is true to its name, characterised by echoing vocal effects that lead to a piercing 303-line that hits with peak-time power. virgos echoes features a persistent synth line that combining effectively with lush layers of melody to create an atmospheric impact. third eye delivers an exhilarating dose of rave thanks to the hypnotizing riff that runs throughout.

zoe mc phersons exploration of this world on string figures is a deeply rhythmic, immersive and forward-thinking piece of elec-tronic-leaning music that remains just as danceable as it does experimental. the album is fundamentally one of duality, exploring the traditional and the contem-porary, organic and electronic, audio and visual, history and the future. rooted in this duality is also a core theme around string being one of the most ancient and playful art forms and the seemingly infinite possibilities it offers in terms of shapes, structures and figures lines up with this as a trans-global art project. one that over time will involve video art, choreography, 3d motion design, macro film, instrumental and electronic sound. although for now is being presented through an av performance, films and a record with mc pherson collaborating with director alessandra leone over the seven tracks (which are laid out as chapters) the record explores glitchy elec-tronics, dub-tinged grooves, polyrhythms, and a huge array of instruments that takes in quiet blasts of atonal sax alongside wonky synths.

sudd records make the leap to vinyl with the help of detroit champ gari romalis. abstraxx (linear mix) kicks off the record in a heady fog of undulating pads, the smoke positively drifting out of the speaker cones over a simple, deep-as-you-like drum pattern. dark ryda (sunset mix) gets a little more funk in its rhythm, but the same mellow mood prevails, almost reaching dub techno levels in its atmospheric chord swells. heat (bout that life mix) takes things out of the darkness and into a lighter frame of mind, but romalis is still firmly in the deep end of the deep house pool with this final cut on the record.

those wizards of digging psychemagik doing the business once again. hot on the heels of last year s monstrous gotta hold on me / wildman they re letting folks know that they were still out there searching in the darkest recesses of the last 40+ years of popular and unpopular music, and boy oh boy are they good at it! the trip lives up to it s name. the track kicks off with some ultra beefed up psychedelic shenanigans, swirling, cacophonous sounds whirl and sweep and gradually drag us into the holographic tunnel, gradually giving way to some heavyweight drums and percussions and unfurling into a muscular psych-discoid beast. this one will send the kids crazy and will undoubtedly cause some damage in the club, both sonically and mentally. but what is the original? we hear you say... answers on a postcard please. sisters of the moon on the flip-side is a very different animal - all laid back, laconic steel-guitars and thundering slo-mo drums and percussion. the dark side of a rural witchcraft dream exposed here, almost menacing... and then? those vocals spring out of the mix amidst the throbbing sexually charged atmosphere and drag us back into the realm of near reality with sultry moans and groans. this one s woozy alright, but in the best possible way. so wrong, it s right and possibly the natural soundtrack to too many of those strange shots that that guy in the weird hat gave us earlier when we entered that country pub. what guy? i hear you ask.... ultimate freak-disco and deepest druid funk for the discerning and psychedelically inclined record consumer.

the levels of deep that trinidadian deep can reach with his sound are almost unfathomable, and he s at it once again for deepartsounds. as if he needed any help getting down low, sarignia bonfa lends her steamy vocals to i need you- and the trademark trini sound gets into a whole new realm of sensuality. fusion pulls things out of the boudoir and into the sunlight, bringing some of that infectious, uplifting soul to the table that he made his name on. future funk places some synths at the front of the mix and sharpens the edges of the drumming, giving the brain one last blast before allstarr motomusic steps up for a remix of i need you that goes down very smooth indeed.

emotional rescue returns to the the work of remix specialists extraordinaire, razormaid, with a special collection of their remixes of cold wave / dark wave synth band, psyche. featuring unreleased, re-edited and remastered versions of some of the bands most club-based tracks on one ep for the first time. formed in 1982 in edmonton, canada by darrin and stephen huss out of love of the new electronic sounds emanating out of europe, psyche soon forged their own path. influenced by the industrial and post-punk sounds of bands like killing joke and alien sex fiend, as well as the synth pop melodies of groups like soft cell and yazoo, the brothers help precipitate the start of darker electronic goth sound.

dokta has been seen lurking around 20:20 vision with a curious take on that label s particular brand of house. that step to the left becomes more pronounced on this record, where dokta gets to call on a wealth of live instrumentation to animate his sound. on london nights he interweaves vocal, ambling keys and crooked basslines into a curious and utterly inspired cocktail of cool-headed pressure, which jason heath then simmers down to a purely instrumental refrain. burnski goes to the other extreme and beefs the track up for a firm and functional ride, while ralph lawson dubs the track out and gives it a low slung swagger.

hailing from france but now based in tokyo, jazzy couscous is a label that explores all kinds of sounds pivoting around the axis of jazz and deep house, but keeping things wide open for variety and experimentation. following releases from brawther, klodio and more besides, it s time for a hefty various artists release that shows off a whole heap of talent. matthieu faubourg keeps thing pumping and detroit-flavoured on a long way, while drezb smooths things out to a chez damier-influenced deep house groove. pascal viscardi gets things properly jacking on the deep-diving digital illusion, and then the record closes out with the blissful ambient excursion of midori featuring victor santonis distance.

having previously appeared alongside tommi vicari jr on a 12inch last year, opto mystics strike out on their own with this 12inch for italian powerhouse vibraphone. new horizon very much represents the new school approach with the long serving italian house label, keeping that deep, melodic quality but embracing new rhythms, tones and approaches. new horizon almost has an akufen quality to it, while bucky triangle could easily transmit from the motor city house scene. m.i.y.e. is a swirling blur of gorgeous synths, and -suddent- finishes the ep off on a surprisingly experimental tip.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

edmondson first came to my attention with his lobster theramin distributed release, flamingo tripper, on his own label lissoms. or so i thought. turns out he was actually a guy who used to serve me in one of my favourite pubs in newcastle. back in those days he was a dub step / drum and bass kid, and as per the trend with all of those guys, hes now showing the house heads how its done, with a much keener feel for sound design, groove and a better ear for a sample than 90% of us lazy people who cut our teeth on a 4/4 beat. edmondson (or sean as i did know him and how i know him once again) is really one of the most exciting producers out there right now for me, and i couldnt be happier that weve reconnected and hes kindly allowed me me me to present some of his amazing music. we have love is an instant classic, and psg is a work of pure emotive art. to remix we have love, ive enlisted dauwd (fresh from his amazing album on technicolour). sean suggested him, and i jumped on the suggestion as he was one of the first people i met when i moved to berlin 4 years ago, and ive been trying to figure out a way of working with him since. he takes a we have love down a kind of more delicate and steppy route. its very pretty, but also really makes you want to dance. to remix psg i asked asok. again, i thought i first met asok about 7 or 8 years ago, when he came and played for a party i used to throw in newcastle. after becoming good friends over the years, we got chatting and it turned out that we were both in magaluf in 1998, and may have actually been involved in the same street brawl. thats not something either of us are proud of, but its definitely food for thought. i’m biased, but i think his remix is my favourite thing he’s ever done, and i love everything he’s touched musically to date, so thats probably an even bigger endorsement than it first seems. his version is big.

official limited edition reissue of asso s italo masterpiece from 1983. featuring -do it again-, a killer balearic disco-style cover of the steely dan classic. on the flip side you get the wonderful boogie jazz-funker -don t stop-, a track which is pure blissed-out dancefloor heaven and deservedly became a loft and garage classic as well as receiving heavy rotation on both the cosmic and balearic scenes. with the coolest of laid-back jazzy piano grooves underpinned with driving funky squelching bass and superb syncopated drums.

instrumental music is supposed to be asemantic and yet a rich language of rhetorical gestures has grown up around it. none of them may have a specific meaning but they easily lead the listener towards an emotion, a sensation, an embryonic story. does any of this mean that music is abstract? or does it, to the contrary, mean that music tells a story? there is no abstraction without a story. is there a story without an abstraction? the composition on this album, is it a radio play? tropa macaca = andré abel and joana da conceição check out their earlier albums, they’re just as great.

sprechen sie rhythm? its time for a new dance. welcome to the wonderful weird of talking drums an unsafe space for poorly executed dance moves, misjudged vibes and narcotic bravery. semi-cosmic, way wonky and oozing grooves, this is music for the fringe class. the party starts with a tripped out tribute to an italian inspiration. c60 lato a sees the crew pluck a couple of killers off a well worn cosmic tape, leave them out in the sun a little too long then stick them back together with an experimental blend of uhu and fufu. springy bass, spangled brass and mangled electronics make for a motherlode of funk, fried just long enough to make the walls melt. bendy.... over on the b-side the crew come through with a little bath-salt boogie, pitched down and loved up for all the slow dancers and romancers out there. strutting like a stoned fox, get serious wraps rubber-limbed bass around propulsive percussion, gets hooky with the horns then slaps you silly with its x-rated synth-smut. pinched from the pound bin and taped over a ch 5 classic, this disco drooler will loosen up even the stickiest floors. freshly dressed and pressed to impress, the drums are talking

debut single breakthrough introduced the insanely catchy but deeply soulful blend of synths and groove, but here on the album that is explored to the fullest with longer breakdowns and more expansive, experimental solos. pocket 5 displays the, possibly unexpected, influences of broken beat and almost combative rhythm playing - particularly in the complex guitar and keys breakdown where koor and o keefe layer conflicting time signatures and battle to ride it out to the heavy drum return.

adrix (p stands for produtor) is one of those contemporary puzzles: born and raised in lisbon, of angolan descent, he moved to manchester at 19, three years ago. we can say the nervous interplay between bass and beat stems from just that. fierce, techy, twitchy grooves run through the whole of -Álbum desconhecido-. it’s in the blood. not surprisingly, adrix has a soft spot for drum ’n’ bass but that’s because it clicked with the adrenalin rush leaping out of kuduro, his true long-standing obsession.

norwegian duo smerz had a prolific 2017, which saw the copenhagen-based henriette and catharina play the likes of club 2 club, moma ps1, sell out half life parties of their own, as well as release five new tracks along with five self-directed videos. clearly not ones to wait around, smerz go in to the new year with their have fun ep on the horizon for release via xl recordings in march 2018. with their unique electronic sound blending deconstructed club music, minimalist r&b and experimental pop and techno, smerz are also prolific djs who s djing style takes a similar route. mixing live vocals over their own music and interlaced with choice cuts aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this duo dj hard in a live setting and are thrilling to watch as well as listen. smerz currently host their own monthly nts radio residency, mixing cutting-edge dance music and darker tones, in what is turning in to their trademark style.
